Secondary school assembly: explaining the new social media age restrictions

[.style-intro] An editable secondary assembly that explains the social media changes and turns the news into an empowering conversation about students' time and attention. [.style-intro]
Why we made this
Students will arrive at school with questions before many of the details are confirmed, and teachers are often the first people they turn to.
This assembly gives busy teachers and school leaders a ready-made way to respond, explaining the changes clearly and being honest about what isn't known yet.
It needs very little preparation and can simply be opened and delivered, or copied to edit and adapt.
Speaker notes and suggested prompts sit alongside every slide, and our full announcement FAQs are linked within them to help with questions on the day. They can also be accessed here.
Who it is for
A 20 minute assembly for secondary students, delivered by teachers or school leaders.
What students will take away
The learning intention is to help students understand the government's social media announcement and what it means for them.
By the end, students will:
- know what has been announced, as far as the details are confirmed.
- understand that social media is designed to capture their time and attention.
- recognise their time as a valuable resource, and how they spend it as a decision that is theirs to make.
