Smartphone Free Childhood's charitable status explained

How our charitable setup works
Smartphone Free Childhood is set up as a charitable fund under the auspices of Prism the Gift Fund (UK charity no. 1099682). This structure means we benefit from full charitable status and oversight, while Prism provides the legal and financial backbone that helps keep everything running smoothly.
In practice, that means:
- We can claim Gift Aid on eligible donations
- We’re supported by a team who handles finance, governance and compliance
- We’re part of a trusted and transparent setup that’s already helped over 50 other grassroots organisations like ours
With Prism acting as our charitable backbone, we can stay lean and mission-driven – focusing on spreading the message, supporting families, and building real momentum for change.
They provide:
- Charitable and legal infrastructure
- Financial administration and reporting
- Charity compliance and governance
- Due diligence on all spending and grant-making
It’s a structure built for growing organisations like ours – and it means we can run efficiently and transparently, while putting more of your donation where it matters.

Our company limited by guarantee
Alongside our charitable fund, Smartphone Free Childhood also operates a company limited by guarantee – a not-for-profit legal structure with no shareholders and no profit distribution.
This is a typical structure for non-profits and we use this company to carry out a small proportion of our work – specifically activities that fall outside the Charity Commission’s strict guidelines for charitable work. That might include:
- Advocacy and campaigning work that’s political in nature
- Certain fundraising activities where we need flexibility to distribute funds or resources
- Other projects that support the mission, but don’t meet the formal criteria for charitable spending
This structure ensures we can keep pushing for change in the most effective way possible – while staying compliant, transparent and focused on our mission.
Both parts of SFC – our charitable fund and our limited company – work side by side to protect childhood and create a culture where kids have more time to learn and grow free from addictive algorithms and devices.
