An accidental movement
Founded in February 2024 after one WhatApp group went viral, Smartphone Free Childhood is now a community of over 350,000 parents working together to stand up for healthier, happier childhoods.
We’ve made it our mission to provide solidarity, support and solutions to parents who are struggling with what’s become one of the defining parenting challenges of our time.
And we’re using the voice of our community to push for more support from the government in the battle to reclaim childhood from Big Tech's addictive algorithms.

From one conversation
At the start of 2024 friends Daisy and Clare set up a WhatsApp group to support each other in the decision to hold off on buying their kids smartphones. To their amazement, thousands of other parents joined the group after a heartfelt Instagram post by Daisy went viral.
After that first group maxed out, hundreds of Smartphone Free Childhood WhatsApp groups sprang up all over the UK, and it became clear that this issue mattered deeply to parents everywhere – who were all crying out for solidarity and support.

To a national movement
In response to this extraordinary demand, Daisy and her husband Joe quit their jobs to launch Smartphone Free Childhood as a charitable organisation and double down on building this movement for change.
We’re now an established non-profit with a growing team, working to raise awareness of the issue, provide support and solidarity to parents and schools across the UK, and build a groundswell of support the government can’t ignore.

With global impact
Since day one the momentum behind this accidental movement has been phenomenal.
In little over a year, Smartphone Free Childhood has sparked a national conversation, mobilised grassroots organising in every corner of the UK, empowered hundreds of thousands of parents to take action, helped schools, towns and boroughs to go smartphone-free, influenced government policy – and inspired spin-off movements in over 30 countries.
And we’re just getting started :)
