primary lesson for ages 8-11

The IRL superpowers mission

An interactive mission to help children recognise what is competing for their attention, and how choosing where to direct it strengthens their real-life superpowers.

Attention is the foundation of everything we want for our pupils. Where children choose to direct it shapes which skills grow, which relationships deepen, and who they become. But holding onto it is getting harder. Many of the platforms and devices children meet every day are deliberately designed to capture their attention and hold it.

Take pupils on a mission to recognise what is competing for their attention, and build the confidence to give it to the real-life superpowers that matter to them.

Your pupils' mission starts here. Time to power up!

Lesson outcomes

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
  1. Recognise the superpowers developed through their interests.
  2. Understand that their superpowers grow stronger with attention.
  3. Identify the features in the screen-filled world that are designed to capture their attention.
  4. Explain how they can choose to give their attention to the real-life things that matter to them.

How it works

This 60 minute workshop is built around an interactive mission. Max Focus, a hero whose powers run on attention, needs pupils' help to uncover the Distractoor, a villain who captures attention using a set of tricks.

Max guides pupils through the mission in a series of incoming transmissions. Between them, pupils take on each mission step in turn: finding the superpowers behind the things they already do, working out what strengthens them, investigating the Distractoor's tricks as case files, and committing to where their attention goes next.

The story is a vehicle for learning. Beneath it sits a clear body of knowledge about attention, how it strengthens real-life superpowers, and how children can choose where it goes.
